Record number of households switching energy supplier

The latest Energy UK switching numbers have revealed that almost 670,000 households switched to a new energy supplier in April. 34% more than April 2018 and the highest amount for one month ever recorded.

The Energy Price Cap Effect

Ofgem revised the energy price cap and the £117 increase came into effect on April 1st. Over 11 million UK households were impacted by the price increase and the negative press around it could be one of the reason so many households choose to move to cheaper energy tariffs in April.

In 2019, so far, over two million (2,119,516) energy switches have taken place. Up 18% on the same point in 2018.

Confidence in Switching is High

Research from the Energy Switch Guarantee (ESG) found that 8 out of 10 consumers are happy with the switching process. ESG is a set of commitments to ensure switching is simple, speedy and secure. It is a voluntary industry initiative that covers around 90% of the retail market.

Lawrence Slade, Energy UK's chief executive, said:

"It is very positive to see that record numbers of customers continue to move to a new supplier in search of a better deal, and we must remember Ofgem's figures also show many more each month move to a better deal with their current supplier.

"So, I would encourage everyone to get in touch with their supplier, or have a look online, to see if there is a better deal for them, whether that is on price or the type of tariff you are looking for.

"And, at a time when we are facing a climate challenge on a global scale, it is important for all of us to look at our energy use and ensure our homes are energy efficient. This is the best way to keep your energy bill down while also reducing your carbon footprint, so you can help save money and the planet."
