A survey of 2,000 consumers (conducted by EY) found that almost a quarter of UK consumers switched their gas or electric supply in 2014. This trend looks set to continue throughout 2015, with more than 8 in 10 of those who switched in 2014 saying they would do so again in the near future.
New suppliers were the favourites of those switching - 37% intended to switch to new suppliers and only 24% would be likely to switch to one of the "big six".
The Main Reasons for Switching Were:
• 39% stated that inaccurate bills was the main reason behind their switch
• 16% said unfriendly service when calling the supplier was reason enough for them to switch
• 12% felt the complaints process was too long
Choosing a new supplier:
• 78% price is a key factor in switching
• 9% claimed customer service was their main motivation
• 6% would switch for a certain brand
Tony Ward, Head of Power & Utilities at EY said "The challenge for the industry is to invest in ways to retain the confidence and loyalty of its consumer base through innovative services".
The Power to Switch Campaign launched this week. In the UK there are a massive 13.5 million households that could financially benefit from comparing and switching their energy supplier. We shop around for everything else, so why not our energy?
In a mission to reach those who haven't considered switching supplier, the Department of Energy & Climate Change launched the "Power to Switch" campaign today.
With 26 energy companies now on the market and some fixed deals being as much as £100 cheaper than this time last year, the energy market has never been more competitive. This means that there has never been a better time to compare and switch supplier!
Launching the campaign Ed Davey, Energy and Climate Change Secretary, said
"When it comes to switching, the power is in people's hands to get a better deal and save.
We've reformed the market so that there are more suppliers, more competition, and a much faster and simpler process to switch. That means millions of people can switch supplier and save hundreds of pounds today"
