Millions of people in the UK are losing out by not shopping about for their Energy Supplier

OFGEM have recently launched their 'Be An Energy Shopper' campaign with the hope of motivating the nation to start energy shopping.

OFGEM carried out a survey to support the launch of the campaign and interestingly, it reveals that British households shop around for everything in life, but aren't placing the same level of importance on their energy bills. Perhaps the most shocking result is that 43% of households in the UK don't prioritise 'energy shopping' to help them find the best deal, despite the fact this could save them valuable pounds.

  • 33% of Brits are concerned about their energy bills

  • Yet 43% don't prioritise shopping around for a better energy deal

  • 'Be An Energy Shopper' campaign set to get the nation bargain hunting for a better deal on their energy

  • OFGEM have made it easier than ever before to get a better deal for your energy

The campaign also revealed that the nation are currently overlooking the benefits of being an energy shopper with almost half (45%) of bill payers in the UK saying they don't feel they could save much money and one in four (24%) saying they thought shopping around for energy would be too much 'hassle'. Previously, over half (53%) of baffled Brits said they have been confused by energy tariffs, and a third (33%) say their energy bills have been a concern. However, recent reforms enforced by OFGEM have resulted in a simpler, clearer and fairer energy market which means finding a better deal has never been easier. OFGEM believe that this will help cut through the confusion previously associated with comparing energy tariffs and in turn help people to start shopping around for their energy. Secretary of State for Energy, at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Edward Davey said: "Making the switch is easier than ever before, and the 'Be an energy shopper' campaign gives consumers practical advice on how to shop around and get the best deal for their energy use. LET'S GO SHOPPING!

The new terminology

TCRs, TILs, Personal Projections, PTCRs

What do all of these mean to you?

The Tariff Comparison Rate (TCR) is a rate for you to compare a tariff against another. It's a cost per kWh that a typical consumer would pay on that tariff. To work out the rate, we assume an average amount of kWh and then include the unit rates, standing charges and any discounts. However, it's ONLY a guideline to help customers compare tariffs, it's not an actual price. You will never pay these rates.

The Tariff Information Label is what you will start seeing on all your energy bills regardless of gas or electricity supplier. This ensures that everyone presents their information in an identical manner.

Personal Projections
Based on the information provided this is an illustration of what you can expect your annual cost for energy to be over the next 12 months. The figures include VAT at the prevailing rate for domestic customers and any discounts applicable to the tariff selected. This is therefore the net cost to you.

This is a personalised version of the TCR, again you will never pay this rate but instead of using average consumption levels we use the ones used to create your Personal Projection. You will only find PTCRs on Energylinx we believe that these provide a more personalised and accurate version to compare one tariff against another.
